New ArtZine edition  "Bare-fisted Africa" by Philippe Bordas

6/11/2013

This is not a story about sport. But more profoundly, the contest becomes a metaphor. The concerto of kenyan ascetic fighters and the opera of senegalese wrestlers are revealing the two opposite sides of a continent. This work is revealing an unseen definition of Africa, his secret duality.

LBM ♥ Drake Powe Yoga

by admin

For the last six months the fantastic Yoga instructor Drake Powe (center) has been coming to the LBM studio. Since most of us had never done Yoga before, we were relieved to find a teacher that brings a great sense of humor along with patience and knowledge. Drake has been a true life changer and we highly recommend him to anyone in the Twin Cities looking for a Yoga instructor.

Visit Drake's website, Skellegense, for information on his group classes or individual sessions or email him at [email protected].

– Alec Soth

PS.  I recently decided it was time to part with the Honda Odyssey in which I'd shot Niagara, Broken Manual, and the Ohio and Michigan Dispatches. Refusing to sell my faithful companion to just anyone, I couldn't be happier that Drake is the new owner. Long live the champagne chariot!

POPCAP '13 at Münsterplatz Basel and Museum der Kulturen Basel, June 6 – 23 2013

About POPCAP ´13

The awarded works of POPCAP '13 - the piclet.org Prize for Contemporary African Photography, will be exhibited at Münsterplatz Basel before and during the worlds leading art fair Art Basel. The exhibition opens on Thursday June 6 at 5 pm in a public event. The artists will be present. The POPCAP '13 winners are:

Anhua Collective, Spain
Dillon Marsh, South Africa
Cristina de Middel, Spain
Alexia Webster, South Africa
Graeme Williams, South Africa

POPCAP is a prize for contemporary African photography that is awarded to photographic portfolios from the African continent or portfolios dealing with the African diaspora. The approximately 360 applications were reviewed by 14 internationally-sourced judges, with the winning entries publicly exhibited from June 6 to 23 before and during Art Basel, at PhotoIreland 2013, and Lagos Photo Festival. One winner’s photographic collection will be presented in European Photography magazine as part of the prize.

The annual competition is open to photographers of any age and descent. Eligible are submissions comprising between 10 and 25 images, representing a body of work and must relate to an African theme. There is no entry fee.

POPCAP was awarded first in 2012, with five winners chosen from 140 submissions by a panel of nine internationally-sourced judges. During the POPCAP ‘13 exhibitions we will aim to maintain a constant discourse regarding African topics through public events running alongside the exhibition, with the overall objective of enhancing awareness of African themes in the arts. To achieve this we are partnering with Museum der Kulturen Basel, the bblackboxx, No Border Academy, and K'Werk-Bildschule bis 16 for the exhibition in Basel. At the Museum der Kulturen POPCAP '13 PERSPECTIVES is on display, showing works from both K'Werk and bblackboxx, No Border Academy. Due to its extensive application in a day-to-day context, we consider photography to be the ideal medium from which to foster an unhindered exchange of ideas.

«Scopophilia» – Anniversary lecture by Nan Goldin

Tuesday, June 18, 2013, 7.30 p.m.
Fotomuseum Winterthur

After her wonderful exhibition I’ll be your mirror sixteen years ago Nan Goldin returns to Fotomuseum Winterthur with her latest slideshow Scopophilia, followed by a talk. Vince Aletti wrote in The New Yorker: Nan Goldin “photographed paintings by Delacroix, Corot, Zurbarán, and Bronzino, which fed that desire, then paired them with pictures of her friends and lovers, creating startling juxtapositions … The result is a sensational paean, at once ecstatic and elegiac, to love, sex, and sensuality.”

Please reserve your seat by sending an email to [email protected] (subject «Nan Goldin»)

Still Searching… A relational Theory of Photography

The writer, curator, and Associate Professor George Baker is our new blogger on still searching. His first contribution leads us on a wild ride from Zoe Leonard's “dark room” to Jonathan Crary's Techniques of the Observer and Susan Sontag's famous essay “In Plato's Cave”. Or in his own words: “In the weeks to come, I will poke and prod at our possibilities for producing a ‘relational’ theory of photography, but also such a history of the photograph as well. I will consistently remember where these thoughts began—next to my dear friend, in the darkness of Zoe Leonard’s camera obscura, pressed upon by the space inside and outside the camera, by the collusion of body and image one found there.”

Critical Mass 2013: Now Open!

From Critical Mass 2012: Tamas Dezso, K.K. DePaul, Urszula Tarasiewicz, Monica Denevan, Sarah Cusimano Miles

Photolucida is pleased to announce the opening of our 10th Annual Critical Mass program. Through Critical Mass, Photolucida works to connect photographers with meaningful opportunities in the gallery, publishing, and editorial worlds. With 200+ well-respected jurors representing a range of genres and affiliations, Critical Mass is a fantastic vehicle for exposure. This year, we're happy to announce three (yes, three!) solo exhibition awards. Blue Sky Gallery, the Center for Fine Art Photography, and the Griffin Museum of Photography will each present a solo exhibition by Critical Mass finalists. Photolucida will contribute funding to support exhibition and/or shipping expenses for solo exhibition artists.

Excited yet?

Read some success stories from past participants, then head on over to register. We look forward to seeing your work!

"Being in the Top 50 is an incredible honor and thrill for me. I am preparing for a show which was a direct result of being a Finalist last year when Hamidah Glasgow of Center for Fine Art Photography offered me the solo show in her comments...I will keep you updated as so many good things are happening. I remember meeting you [Laura Moya] for the first time in Atlanta and you told me to "keep at it." Words of wisdom I have followed. I said at the time "Photolucida was the gold standard" and I continue to hold that opinion. Thank you for Photolucida and all you have done for me and our community. It is very much appreciated."

- Susan Barnett, past Critical Mass participant

The Jurors

We work hard to bring together an international group of industry professionals to jury Critical Mass each year. The jury represents a broad range of gallerists, curators, publishers, and photo editors - all looking to "discover" new work for their venues and publications. Our juror list reflects the strength of Critical Mass programming, now in its tenth year. The more opportunities we can provide for photographers, the better! Take a look:

The BERLINER LISTE will be held from September 19th to 22nd, 2013 for the tenth time. As a discoverer's fair for contemporary art, the BERLINER LISTE focusses particularly on exciting international galleries and artists that enrich the art market with their current work and are very interesting for collectors.

This year, the BERLINER LISTE offers up an international platform for photography in Berlin with the new Photography Section. With its long traditions in photography and its many exhibition halls, Berlin plays a significant role in the photography world—more than enough reason to open up an exhibition section dedicated to the discipline.

The Kraftwerk Berlin, with its unique, urban ambience releases sacral qualities with its huge, high ceilings. The industrial monument offers an incomparable architectural stage to exhibit classical photography as well as exiting new tendacies.

The Photography Section will be given visual prominence within this year's exhibition space and be readily identifiable. The section is expected to attract many photography lovers and collectors.

Curator Stephan Köhler is Project Manager of the Photography Section and will put together an impressive programme of international galleries and foundations exclusively focused on photography. Among the additional features is the awarding of the Peter C. Schlüschen sport photography prize (endowed with 10.000 EUR). Intensive press work and a notable marketing budget will ensure the necessary media attention.

Artists, galleries and project spaces can apply online until June 30th, 2013. Please do not hesitate to contact us via email or telephone +49 (0)30 77 008 993. As regards artistical photo content, we can also put you in direct contact with our curator, Stephan Koehler—just drop us an email and we forward it to him.

We are looking forward to your application!

Warm regards,
Jörgen Golz
Managing Director
